The “Heel Deal”

Friday, June 25th, 2010

That’s right, I said heel, not heal, as in what the Wonderbar does best…HEEL, like the bottom of your foot.  I do a fair amount of working out, or maybe it’s just the fact that I don’t get pedicures unless I’m forced to go out in fancy sandals (which is rare), or maybe I’m just too tired to take the time to get down and scrub my cracked heels.  At the end of the day (literally), the bottoms of my feet aren’t exactly on the top of my list.

However, because they had gotten really bad, and I knew from experience that the Wonderbar healed my swollen toe, I decided to try a little experiment.  I sort of forgot, until the other night, that I was even conducting an experiment- it had become second nature to me, I guess.  Anyway, what I do every, single night is follow my whole Wonderbar face and neck routine, and at the end, instead of rinsing my hands (which I really don’t do, anyway), I rub the extra Wonderbar suds all over my heels.  (Normally I would just leave it to dry on my hands, where, by the way, I have seen great improvement…they are softer and smoother, not to mention, the brown spots have most certainly faded over time.)

Anyway, after about six weeks of treating my heels, I have noticed that they are healing.  They are much softer and the cracks are slowly, but surely going away.  Now, I can only imagine that if I paired this routine with an occasional pedicure, or gave it half an effort and actually did a foot scrub, or even applied a moisturizer once in a while, that my heels would be even better.  For now, though, it’s enough for me.

Next time you apply the Wonderbar and go to rinse your hands…don’t.  Don’t waste a sud.  Use it on a scar, a rough patch, a sun-damaged area, an age spot, a scrape…or any part of your skin that may have been neglected or damaged.  You’ll be pleasantly surprised, and if you make a habit of it, you might even fall head over heels all over again with this little brown bar, that you THOUGHT was only for your face.

The Wonderbar: Can One Bar Really Do It All?

StyleList

Post-Memorial Day Weekend means it’s officially summer, which will (hopefully) lead to long weekends at the beach and, inevitably, more than a few hot and sticky days.

What better time to detox your complexion and pare your skincare routine down to travel-ready proportions?

Enter the Wonderbar, a bar that looks like your-run-of-the-mill soap, but claims to act as cleanser, exfoliator, toner and moisturizer. It magically gets all manner of gunk and impurities out of your pores, and leaves your skin perfectly pH-balanced, clean and soft. It’s ideal for all skin types, even if you battle acne, rosacea orhyperpigmentation.

How is such a thing possible? Wonderbar’s own Tiffany Masterson explains.

“Wonderbar’s slightly acidic pH base of 5.65 is ideal for cleansing,” says Masterson. “It also contains Heilmoor Clay to help draw toxins out of the skin, plus a microalgae complex called Chlorey’nahre to moisturize and normalize the skin cell turnover rate.” Masterson suggests pairing it with a basic night-time moisturizer (without added AHAs or retinoids) and a physical sunscreen, made with titanium dioxide or zinc, in the morning.

It’s simple. Just lather it up, apply to wet or dry skin, leave on for 3-5 minutes and rinse off; Masterson says you can use a dab as a spot treatment for pimples, too.

Results-wise, expect to see a brighter tone, smaller pores, firmer texture and faded sunspots, according to Masterson.

We’ve been Wonderbar-ing for only a few days now, and are already psyched to see fewer clogged pores, plus a noticeably more even complexion.

This teensy bar may not be much to look at, but your skin will be.

Grin and Bar it! A few updates from WonderbarUSA…

Friday, May 28th, 2010

This post is sort of all over the map on topics, but lots of action lately, so lots to discuss! Some good questions, some good answers…people are really curious and that’s a great thing! I guess when there is endless debate over what makes a product work so well, it’s good news. I had the opportunity to travel back to New York last week and sit down with several beauty editors to discuss the Wonderbar. And once again, all seemed intrigued and anxious to give it a test-run. It was so much fun to see where everything goes down.  The best question to come out of my desk-side tour came from Vogue and InStyle magazines regarding bacterial growth on the bar. This is a legitimate concern for many and I’m happy to report that the answer is no, bacteria cannot grow on the bar. There are two reasons for this: 1) Moor is anti-bacterial and 2) The pH is acidic, therefore, bacteria die. Very good to know… The second question I want to address today is one that appeared in the form of a debate regarding the claim that states the bar “is effective in flushing out all of these toxins that may have been trapped under the skin for many years.” Some people were misunderstanding this to mean that toxins will remain under the skin for, literally, years, which is not possible. The answer straight from the manufacturer: “Toxins are under the skin cumulatively over long periods of time. Please do not take it literally as years.” So, to further clarify, they do not mean that the toxins stay under the skin for years, but rather, that some of us continually or consistently use toxic products and so there is a steady presence of toxins in our skin. I can definitely see how this would be misunderstood and hope that helps to clear it up… Lastly, I want to share a good rule of thumb regarding Wonderbar usage. Stick to products with a sole purpose. In other words, moisturizer meant to lock in moisture, powder and foundation (if you simply must) meant to cover and sun block meant to protect. Nothing added- SPFs, fragrances, chemicals, etc. Once you have adjusted to the bar, you may introduce actives or serums one at a time, so if you have some reaction, you can identify what is causing it. Many people say, “WHAT? I have to give up all my actives and my mineral powders?? I can’t do that!” Well, you don’t have to forever, but if you end up wanting to, now that’s a different story. We only ask that you give the actives and serums a rest while you are adjusting to the Wonderbar. You’ll get to know the bar and how it works best for you personally. Ironically, you might just find that you don’t need to wear makeup once you have adjusted. But the actives and serums? Yes, of course, reintroduce them at your discretion. One thing I learned while in New York is that the bare look is definitely “in” and chemical and toxin laden products are on their way “out”! Let the Wonderbar address your skin issues so that you don’t have to cover them up anymore! :) Hooray for Spring!

These are a few of my favorite things…

We wanted to address some of the questions that have been posted on a few skincare forums regarding the Wonderbar.  We’ve compiled comprehensive information on the product based on input from the creator, the manufacturer, customers, and our own 15+ month experience using Wonderbar. If you have additional questions or concerns, or if you have had issues with Wonderbar despite using the product correctly and consistently for the recommended six weeks, please contact us at info@wonderbarusa.com.

Many users will experience the normal symptoms of the healing phase (dryness, irritation, white bumps, breakouts, brown patches) before achieving the clear, balanced, healthy skin Wonderbar promises. If customers stop using the treatment before the healing phase is complete—or use incompatible products with the regimen—they will not experience the benefits of Wonderbar. It is imperative that users follow the recommended course to accurately judge its efficacy and see the dramatic results Wonderbar delivers.

Like an exercise regimen, Wonderbar requires commitment—if you give up after two weeks or “cheat,” it won’t work. Wonderbar isn’t a quick-fix solution or a one-time-use treatment—it’s as much a part of your ongoing health care regimen as a quality shampoo or a daily multi-vitamin.

The questions:

What is in the Wonderbar and what does each component do?

a) Patented Base: provides a mildly acidic, pH-balanced cleansing environment

b) Moor: provides gentle, natural detoxification

c) Exclusive Microalgae Extract: heals, nourishes, protects and moisturizes while promoting cell turnover

d) Olive and Chamomile Oils: protect and hydrate

What causes breakouts during the healing phase?

a) The Heilmoor clay in the Wonderbar detoxifies your skin and draws out toxins, which can cause breakouts as toxins are brought to the surface.

What are the toxins that the Wonderbar claims to purge?

a) Wonderbar draws out many of the toxins that skincare and cosmetics deposit, which can accumulate over long periods of time. The greater the buildup of chemicals under the surface of your skin, the more severe the healing phase. Thus, children or adults with “virgin” skin will experience a minimal healing phase.

Why does skin become dry and irritated during the healing crisis?

a) Dryness is a sign of skin’s healing process and occurs before skin reaches optimal balance. We recommend that you continue to use the bar during this time and complete the regimen. The dryness subsides with continued use and your skin eventually begins to produce its own moisture, restoring natural balance. A good basic moisturizer can help keep skin hydrated during the dry phase and is safe to use in conjunction with the Wonderbar.

Can the healing crisis cause rough brown marks to appear on your skin?

a) Yes, but these are brown patches of dry skin that eventually come off with continued use.

Does Wonderbar claim to get rid of Melasma?

a) No, we claim that the bar fades hyper-pigmentation. Customers have shared that Wonderbar heals Melasma, but it is not among our claims.

What drives the cell turnover when using the Wonderbar?

a) The Chlorey’nahre.

What is Chlorey’nahre exactly?

a) Chlorey’nahre (CLO) is the name for an exclusive combination of algae extracts combined with hMA, which is extracted specifically to formulate Wonderbar. Chlorey’nahre is the healing component of the product and is renowned for its ability to penetrate and heal the skin.

What happens to your skin if you leave the Wonderbar on too long?

a) Wonderbar acts as a powerful exfoliant, toner and cleanser in one. 3-5 minutes twice daily is all you need to heal and rebalance skin.  Due to the potency of the product, we recommend that you avoid actives such as retinols or other types of “acid” products—the combination is too harsh and irritating.

Have clinical trials been done with the Wonderbar?

a) No, our customer results speak for themselves.

What is Tiffany Masterson’s background?

a) As a partner in Wonderbar Distributors, I have received feedback from hundreds of customers and am extremely familiar with the proper usage and benefits of the bar. However, I am not a scientist or dermatologist; customers should also seek the advice of a dermatologist when necessary.

Is the Wonderbar the same bar as Eumora?

a) No, the Wonderbar is a more advanced and more effective formulation made by the same manufacturer.

WHICH MOISTURIZER AND SUNSCREEN SHOULD I USE?

a) A good rule of thumb in choosing a moisturizer (or sunblock) is to stick with one that has a sole purpose: in the case of a moisturizer, to provide a barrier that locks in moisture, and in the case of a sunblock, to protect.  Plain and simple.  Try to avoid moisturizers with added perfumes and chemicals, SPFs, retinoids, AHAs, Salicylic Acids, etc.  For sun protection, choose a physical sunblock with the active ingredients Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide.  This will sit on top of your skin and provide a shield from the sun, as opposed to penetrating your pores.

and, last but not least, this question usually comes to us in the form of a scream through the phone…

WHY IS IT SO SMALL?!?!?

a) Precious things sometimes come in small packages.  The size is not at all indicative of the life of the bar.  It lasts a lot longer than it appears it would and it is not soap, so if thought of as soap, the size might disappoint you.  When people use the bar and see how long it lasts, they are delighted and amazed.

We hope this will answer some of the questions about our rising star, the Wonderbar.  Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if your question wasn’t answered.  Curiosity is a great thing and when it comes to the Wonderbar, it is clearly peaking off the charts!

Alex Samuels of SELF Magazine talks about her daily beauty regimen and Wonderbar!

Getting to know… Self Magazine as seen on Being High Maintenance, not Bitchy Blog!

“….Recently I got the chance to poke one of the brains behind Self’s beauty experts. Alex Samuels is an associate beauty editor at Self and she was kind enough to answer my questions about working at Self and what it takes to make it in the publishing industry.

MizzJ: Tell me a bit about yourself – what’s your background, and how did you get started at Self?
Alex: I was a journalism/news editorial major at University of Colorado in Boulder, and worked at a music magazine (MarqueeMag.com) for three years during college. I also worked in the web department of a beauty company and at two business journals, but quickly realized my heart wasn’t in it. I got started at SELF because I met Elaine, our beauty director, when I was still in college (I was working for a beauty company one summer) and ended up interning for her the next summer. After graduation, I e-mailed her for an informational interview and ended up getting an internship. A few months later, I applied for the editorial assistant position and – two years later – was promoted to Associate Editor.

MizzJ: What do you do as a beauty editor?
Alex: I pitch newsy stories for the front half of the beauty section. Once we decide on a lineup, I either research and write the stories, or assign them to writers. I also round up all the product that appear in my stories. Then, I edit the pieces with my top editor (who is amazing), and work with the designers as they create the layouts. I oversee our annual Spa Giveaway in April, our Healthy Beauty Awards in May and our Trend Report in October. I also attend Fashion Week to round up beauty trends for the upcoming season.

MizzJ: What are the best perks of the job?
Alex: Writing, trend-spotting, amazing events and experiences.

MizzJ: And the worst parts of the job?
Alex: The late nights, but those aren’t so bad.

MizzJ: Best beauty tips you ever heard?
Alex: I have three:

  1. Be confident in who you are. Joi-de-vivre can erase any physical flaw.
  2. Wash your face twice a day and use a simple moisturizer with SPF. It sounds almost too simple, but I don’t think there is anything prettier than clean, gorgeous skin.

  3. Be nice to your hair.

MizzJ: What’s in your daily beauty regimen?
Alex: Wash my face (I’m a big fan of the Wonderbar – http://wonderbarusa.com/), brush my teeth, tweeze my brows if I need to. Pop in contacts, load up on Kiehls Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 15, dot concealer where I need it and add a couple swipes of mascara. Then, I flip my head, spray with texturizer (I’m loving the earthy smell of Kevin Murphy Heated Defense lately) and shake it out. I only wash my hair two-maaaaaaybe three-times a week. Otherwise it gets too dry! Oh – and if I need to look especially nice, I’ll dig through my purse for a bright lipstick and apply it on the subway (after my coffee, of course).

MizzJ: What is your signature makeup look?
Alex: Lately? MAC Morange Lipstick. I’m obsessed. Otherwise, just really clean skin and lots of mascara.

MizzJ: Who’s your beauty icon? (that person who always looks just flawless and whose look you love to admire and emulate)
Alex: Jenny Lewis. I used to go see her band (Rilo Kiley) at the Westchester Community College Auditorium when I was in high school and am STILL obsessed with her style. Plus, she has the most gorgeous skin and always rocks perfectly tousled hair.

MizzJ: What advice do you have to give to someone who dreams of following in your footsteps and becoming a magazine editor?
Alex: Work hard, work efficiently, and innovatively, and be ready to get your hands dirty. There are fabulous parts to the job, but for every “glamorous” minute you spend at events, there’s five more minutes you need to spend at your desk working your butt off. Oh – and don’t be afraid to work or write for free (at first). Of course, getting paid is ideal, but internships are rarely money-makers and a byline in your book can be more valuable than the little bit of cash you’d get from writing it.

Thank you Alex for your insightful and interesting answers! You can check out Alex’s latest articles in the May 2010 issue of Self, out on stands now and featuring the gorgeous Zoe Saldana on the cover.”

Product Swap? Not a bad idea for either party if you’re swapping Wonderbar for Alterna…

Saturday, April 10th, 2010

alterna

This is the first “product swap” that I’ve agreed to, and boy, am I glad I did!  I live in Houston, Texas, where the norm is hot and humid.  If it’s drizzly outside and you have someplace to go, you can forget feeling cute.  You can, however, count on your hair to do whatever it is you don’t want it to do…full becomes stringy, straight becomes frizzy, bouncy goes flat.  Charming.  Anyway, after living here your whole life you just sort of accept that unless you have a standing appointment at a salon (not the norm for anyone I know), then it’s just another bad hair day.

Two weeks ago, I got an email from the PR rep for Alterna Hair Care in Beverly Hills, who had just gotten back from an editor day in New York (just like the one I had in January- really fun).  She went on to say that her favorite question to ask the beauty editors is, “What is your favorite new product?”  She posed the question to one of the editors from a well-known weekly, and the answer she got (very thankfully) was “the Wonderbar”.    The editor went on and on and raved so much that Lauren from Alterna wanted to try it immediately!  She sent the email suggesting a product swap and I have to admit, I was hesitant at first.  Caviar Anti-Aging Shampoo?  Whatever….shampoo is shampoo.  I’m not that into products, really.  I don’t really like spending money on creams and serums and lotions and potions…OR, shampoos, conditioners, hair spritzers and sprays.  I DON”T!  I’d much rather spend money on some great new workout pants.

Well, thankfully I accepted the product swap and thankfully I was wrong again (I know, that’s happening a lot lately, but it’s OK, I’m learning a lot lately too! ;) )  My mistake?  Shampoo is NOT just shampoo, or at least not THIS shampoo.  On a side note, I remember a time in North Carolina when my husband and I went trolling for pizza places.  We went in and sat down and the first thing I said to the waiter was, “Is the pizza good here?”.  His response was, “I don’t know, pizza is pizza”.  I got up and walked out.  The people at Alterna get it.  They take this hair thing seriously, because my hair seriously looks good today.  TODAY!  It is miserable outside!  Sprinkly, wet, hot, humid, muddy.  We got up early to go to my little boy’s T-ball game…we get to the parking lot and I’m finding myself wanting to hop out of the car.  I think I was feeling kinda cute.  You should see my hair!!??!!  It’s totally smooth, shiny, bouncy…..like it’s not humid outside.  Like, I’m in Los Angeles or something.  I love this stuff and I recommend that you go on the website and find a location near you and go buy some.  I don’t think you will be sorry.  Here’s what she sent: Caviar Anti-Aging Moisture Shampoo, Caviar Anti-Aging Moisture Conditioner, Caviar Anti-Aging Rapid Repair Spray and Ultra Fine Brushable Hair Spray.  I already called a meeting this morning with my four monsters to issue a warning.  ”Look closely and just know that the four bottles I am holding in my hands are not to be touched, held, opened, looked at, sprayed, hidden, eaten, or used as weapons under ANY circumstances and if they are, I’m coming after ALL of you, without any regard to who actually did it.”  I don’t think they were listening, but we’ll see….

Click on the picture above and it will take you to the website.  Just so you know, Alterna did not ask me to do this and if you think I’m doing it just so they’ll send me more, you might just be right.  It’s my new favorite thing and it looks very nice next to Wonderbar-ed skin :) !

My NANA! At 87, she’s still got it…..and it’s no Wonder!

Nana

This is a testimonial for the ages…..my Nana bought a Wonderbar right when I first started selling them.  NOT because she thought it would work, but for the same reason you buy girl scout cookies from your niece, she did it to support my efforts.  She told me at the time that she just loved it and she was so proud of me for trying to sell it.  :)   Secretly, she thought it was some sort of scammy-type thing…..turns out, she was wrong. Lots of people were wrong, by the way!  Thank God!  Also, she’s never been particularly interested in “skincare”, so asking her to wash her face twice a day was not really in the cards.

Flash forward a few months and my Nana is sitting in her den watching television.  She reached up to touch her face and could hardly believe what she was feeling!  Her 87 year old skin was SOFT.  “Could this be?”, she said.  Unfortunately, Nana got sick and landed in the hospital for several days.  It sort of sidetracked things for her and she wasn’t faithful about using the bar.  I sent her another bar for Mother’s day, but she was back to doubtful.

A few months later at the end of a visit, we sat at the kitchen table waiting for her friend, Syd Howard, to pick her up for the airport (he was one hour late, by the way, while Nana was four hours early, just so you know).   We had a good long talk and had a chance to discuss the bar.  She admitted that she wasn’t really using it so much, so I gave her my full pitch again.  What could she do at that point, but ask if she could take a four-in-one home with her?  She began to faithfully use it every day.

At first she thought it was her hair, but then she realized she hated her hair, so yes, it MUST be her skin.  Something was going on and don’t think for a second that it escaped Auntie Florence when she came over for a visit one day.  Auntie Florence, who never gives compliments, asked my Nana straight away what she was doing to make her skin glow so much!  She even added that Nana’s skin had never looked better.    Nana, never one to miss an opportunity to brag about her grandchildren, answered, “My Tiffy is selling this Wonderbar!”  Florence, who turned 91 this year, was all over it.  On her first ill-fated attempt, she accidentally reached for the wrong bar and ended up sleeping with regular soap all over her face, but in fairness to Florence, the lighting in the bathroom probably wasn’t that great.  Eventually, though, she reached for the right bar and has been happy ever since.

In conclusion, I would like to directly quote my Nana sharing her favorite Wonderbar story to date:

“I walked in to my bridge club gathering, and yes, I did have on a darling new top, but I mean, I started to say hello, and one at a time they started to say ”You look so fabulous, what have you done?”   They said they had never seen me look so good and son of a gun, when I looked in the mirror, I couldn’t even recall looking that good, I was almost embarrassed!  And you know, Tiffy, I’m not used to getting compliments anymore, you just don’t get them at 87, but the very next morning one of the ladies called JUST to tell me how beautiful I looked, and I have to agree that it’s my skin, because it sure isn’t my body!”

So that’s the story of Nana and the Wonderbar.  It goes to show that if you give the bar a chance, it’ll work on whatever skin you have.  And you might even get a compliment or two out of the deal…
