Wonderbar to the rescue for acne on the back!

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Or…‘Bacne’, which is another way to say back acne or body acne. It tends to form on the back, upper arms and the buttocks and can take several forms: pimples, blackheads, pustules and cysts, which are painful and form deep under the skin’s surface.

“Back acne tends to occur around puberty when the sebaceous glands, which produce sebum, start functioning. When too much sebum is produced, pores and hair follicles can become clogged, attracting bacteria. This can lead to acne.”  Dermatologists will prescribe various topical treatments such as tetracycline, Minocycline, Retin-A, Benzoyl peroxide, etc.  The Wonderbar is more cost effective and based on what we hear from our customers, more effective all-together.

For a quick and easy way to manage the “bacne”, try putting a layer of the Wonderbar on clean, dry skin after getting out of the shower.  The skin on your back and other body parts is not as fragile, so we recommend that you sleep in the Wonderbar.  Your skin can get dry in the beginning, just as it does on your face, but it will pass and soon you will find yourself “bacne” free!

How to Prevent Back Acne

Exfoliation is a great way to get rid of dead skin cells that tend to build up on the back, buttocks and back of the arms. Use a sugar scrub (milder than salt scrubs) in the shower on a weekly basis.

Experiment with different routines…until you get it “just right”.

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Like in Goldilocks, real life is sometimes filled with second and third tries before we get it “just right”.  The same is true with the Wonderbar.  Your routine can be tweaked and tweaked until it is perfect for you.  Some people sleep in it, some people use it twice a day, and yet some people feel that once is enough for them.  Our skin will guide us and the more we listen, the better off we will be.  For example, during the winter months, when the air is SO dry, I use the bar once a day (at night) with a little extra facial oil for moisture.  During the summer, I like to use it twice daily with my sunblock as a moisturizer during the day.   That is what works for me.

We are always telling people to get to know their Wonderbar, how it works best and which products work best…for them.  Don’t give up if you find you are breaking out a little, simply adjust the combinations of products you are using with the bar.  After the initial dry phase in the first 2-3 weeks of use, your skin should become balanced.  If you find you are still too dry, just cut back a little until you do find that balance.  Everyone is different, climates are different, our genes are different and we have different habits and diets.  One thing is for sure though, with so many functions and variations of use, the Wonderbar can fit into almost any routine for any type of person, young or old.  A wonderful skin care routine, just right for you!

A tip for the tip of your…nose!

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Before I ever started using the Wonderbar, I could be found in Sephora once a month digging for something…anything, to help reduce the size of my pores. I had a little rosacea happening which only made my pores look more pronounced. Using expensive products like Murad and Obagi made my skin look healthier for sure, but NOTHING helped with the redness and PORES. Then the Wonderbar came along. It was immediate. Redness and pores were drastically reduced. If you happened to be in the Houston area at the time, I think you might have heard me screaming from the rooftops about this amazing Wonderbar. I was selling it out of my car because it was all I could talk about. People just rolled their eyes when they saw me coming. :)

Flash forward two years and here we are. I still use the Wonderbar every day, and I wanted to share my latest Wonderbar trick. My skin is balanced, so the need for powder is minimal. I only dust some on my nose if my sun block is making it shiny. I ran out of powder last week, though, so I decided to just wet the bar and dab that on my nose instead. To my surprise and amusement, it ended up having the exact same effect as the powder- a little coverage, a matte finish AND it made my drastically reduced pores look even smaller than before. I just leave it on all day without needing to reapply. How easy is that? Try it and share your results…and if you have any other Wonderbar tips, share those too! We love hearing from you!!

Ten simple, and not so simple, ways to keep your skin gorgeous in 2011!

Sunday, January 2nd, 2011

1) No wonder here!  The Wonderbar gently cleanses, exfoliates and detoxifies.  It keeps your skin clean and balanced and promotes cell rejuvenation.  It’s a great alternative to harsh topicals and five-step routines!

2) I’ll drink to that!  Hydrate by drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water per day. This will help to keep your skin moist, refreshed and supple, which will help the skin fight off developing wrinkles and blemishes.  Vita- Coco is our favorite way here at WonderbarUSA to get there, boasting the five key electrolytes found in blood, there’s not a more effective or delicious way to stay hydrated!

3) Count your sheep!  Sleep allows the body to restore itself and in turn re-energizes the organs, the largest of which is your skin. By maintaining a regular sleep pattern, you will feel more energized and your skin will retain a healthy, fresh look.

4) Work it out!  Exercise increases the flow of blood and oxygen to the skin cells. When you sweat, your body expels toxins through the skin with ease from the opened pores. Sweating effectively cleans the pores from dirt, dead skin cells and excess sebum.  Plus, you’ll get that healthy glow that looks so young and vibrant!

5) Lock it in!  Moisturize in conjunction with the Wonderbar, and that should do the trick. Most moisturizers are mainly oil and water-based and work to keep our skin’s natural oils from escaping the skin. No matter how much lotion you slather on, it won’t put moisture back into your skin. With the Wonderbar, a plain one is all you need, so skip all of the fancy extra ingredients.  The most basic moisturizer will help you retain the moisture you need to stay looking young.

6) Rock that block!  Protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays. Sunshine and tanning beds are the main reasons for premature aging of the skin. By applying a physical sun block and keeping your face well protected from UV rays, you can help to prevent premature aging.  With the Wonderbar, make sure the active ingredients are Zinc Oxide and/or Titanium Dioxide, as they won’t penetrate your pores like chemical sunscreen will and you’ll get better coverage.

7) Move to the “No Smoking” section permanently! Smoking causes premature aging and yellowing of the skin. The tobacco that is released into the air dries out your skin, while the smoke you inhale constricts the flow of blood to blood vessels, therefore preventing your skin of essential nutrients that your body supplies.  You can do everything else on this list, but if you continue to smoke, your skin will reflect it.

8)  Go the “whole” way!  Whole foods that is… your outside appearance reflects what’s on your inside. Maintain a healthy and balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.  See my post here on how to eat your way to gorgeous skin!

9) Go Fish Oils! Essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are known to play a critical role in promoting healthy skin.  They help to regulate cellular function and maintain elasticity and suppleness in the skin.   Take the supplements daily and see an improvement in your skin, nails and hair!

And last, but not least…

10) Kill ‘em with kindness!  Goodness, generosity and kindness all breed contentment. I have a friend whose skin literally shines, along with her eyes and smile.  She would give you the shirt off her back, she oozes love and goodwill and it shows in her face. Contentment shines through your eyes and skin and helps you stay young!

A little education on exfoliation….

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Nothing a baby washcloth can't handle!

The Wonderbar, as you all know by now, is a cleanser, toner and exfoliate. If used on a regular basis, with compatible products, there is really no need to add much more than a very basic moisturizer (if needed) and a good physical block to your routine.  Problems can arise if you complicate things with other products that can be too much for your skin while using the Wonderbar.  As an example, if you try to exfoliate your skin, especially with a harsh scrub, it can be too much.  During the dry phase in the first 2-3 weeks, it would seem that in order to speed things up, you should scrub the dead skin off.  However, doing so is not recommended.  With patience you will see that the dryness passes and the dead skin comes off on its own.  Later on, it can become appropriate on occasion to gently exfoliate once every two weeks or so, but not until you are fully adjusted to the bar.

Exfoliation is the removal of the oldest dead skin cells that cling to the skin’s outermost surface. It is an important part of both facials and body treatments.  When done correctly, exfoliation leaves the skin feeling smoother and fresher looking. It also aids in the penetration of expensive facial products like antioxidant and vitamin serums.

The following are two ways to exfoliate your skin:

1) Mechanical- the dead cells are physically rubbed off with an abrasive.  Examples include salt scrubs, jojoba beads, washcloths and facial loofahs.

2) Chemical- Enzymes or acids are used to help slough the dead cells away.  Examples include AHAs, BHAs, Retin-A and different fruit enzymes.

As mentioned above, you can try one of the two ways and have great results once adjusted.  Using a baby washcloth is my personal favorite…it’s very gentle, not to mention inexpensive.  We hear from many clients that the Clarisonic works well too!

As for Chemical exfoliation, you can try to introduce a product while making sure you pay close attention and look for any adverse reactions such as redness or breakouts…if this occurs, then stop.  Some retinol devotees, in an effort to keep all of their anti-aging weapons in their arsenal, have found a way to use the product with their Wonderbar and are thrilled with the results.  So, you never know how your skin will react, but keep experimenting to find what works best for you.   You can also email us for tips on tweaking your routine!

The “Heel Deal”

Friday, June 25th, 2010

That’s right, I said heel, not heal, as in what the Wonderbar does best…HEEL, like the bottom of your foot.  I do a fair amount of working out, or maybe it’s just the fact that I don’t get pedicures unless I’m forced to go out in fancy sandals (which is rare), or maybe I’m just too tired to take the time to get down and scrub my cracked heels.  At the end of the day (literally), the bottoms of my feet aren’t exactly on the top of my list.

However, because they had gotten really bad, and I knew from experience that the Wonderbar healed my swollen toe, I decided to try a little experiment.  I sort of forgot, until the other night, that I was even conducting an experiment- it had become second nature to me, I guess.  Anyway, what I do every, single night is follow my whole Wonderbar face and neck routine, and at the end, instead of rinsing my hands (which I really don’t do, anyway), I rub the extra Wonderbar suds all over my heels.  (Normally I would just leave it to dry on my hands, where, by the way, I have seen great improvement…they are softer and smoother, not to mention, the brown spots have most certainly faded over time.)

Anyway, after about six weeks of treating my heels, I have noticed that they are healing.  They are much softer and the cracks are slowly, but surely going away.  Now, I can only imagine that if I paired this routine with an occasional pedicure, or gave it half an effort and actually did a foot scrub, or even applied a moisturizer once in a while, that my heels would be even better.  For now, though, it’s enough for me.

Next time you apply the Wonderbar and go to rinse your hands…don’t.  Don’t waste a sud.  Use it on a scar, a rough patch, a sun-damaged area, an age spot, a scrape…or any part of your skin that may have been neglected or damaged.  You’ll be pleasantly surprised, and if you make a habit of it, you might even fall head over heels all over again with this little brown bar, that you THOUGHT was only for your face.

The Wonderbar: Can One Bar Really Do It All?

StyleList

Post-Memorial Day Weekend means it’s officially summer, which will (hopefully) lead to long weekends at the beach and, inevitably, more than a few hot and sticky days.

What better time to detox your complexion and pare your skincare routine down to travel-ready proportions?

Enter the Wonderbar, a bar that looks like your-run-of-the-mill soap, but claims to act as cleanser, exfoliator, toner and moisturizer. It magically gets all manner of gunk and impurities out of your pores, and leaves your skin perfectly pH-balanced, clean and soft. It’s ideal for all skin types, even if you battle acne, rosacea orhyperpigmentation.

How is such a thing possible? Wonderbar’s own Tiffany Masterson explains.

“Wonderbar’s slightly acidic pH base of 5.65 is ideal for cleansing,” says Masterson. “It also contains Heilmoor Clay to help draw toxins out of the skin, plus a microalgae complex called Chlorey’nahre to moisturize and normalize the skin cell turnover rate.” Masterson suggests pairing it with a basic night-time moisturizer (without added AHAs or retinoids) and a physical sunscreen, made with titanium dioxide or zinc, in the morning.

It’s simple. Just lather it up, apply to wet or dry skin, leave on for 3-5 minutes and rinse off; Masterson says you can use a dab as a spot treatment for pimples, too.

Results-wise, expect to see a brighter tone, smaller pores, firmer texture and faded sunspots, according to Masterson.

We’ve been Wonderbar-ing for only a few days now, and are already psyched to see fewer clogged pores, plus a noticeably more even complexion.

This teensy bar may not be much to look at, but your skin will be.

Grin and Bar it! A few updates from WonderbarUSA…

Friday, May 28th, 2010

This post is sort of all over the map on topics, but lots of action lately, so lots to discuss! Some good questions, some good answers…people are really curious and that’s a great thing! I guess when there is endless debate over what makes a product work so well, it’s good news. I had the opportunity to travel back to New York last week and sit down with several beauty editors to discuss the Wonderbar. And once again, all seemed intrigued and anxious to give it a test-run. It was so much fun to see where everything goes down.  The best question to come out of my desk-side tour came from Vogue and InStyle magazines regarding bacterial growth on the bar. This is a legitimate concern for many and I’m happy to report that the answer is no, bacteria cannot grow on the bar. There are two reasons for this: 1) Moor is anti-bacterial and 2) The pH is acidic, therefore, bacteria die. Very good to know… The second question I want to address today is one that appeared in the form of a debate regarding the claim that states the bar “is effective in flushing out all of these toxins that may have been trapped under the skin for many years.” Some people were misunderstanding this to mean that toxins will remain under the skin for, literally, years, which is not possible. The answer straight from the manufacturer: “Toxins are under the skin cumulatively over long periods of time. Please do not take it literally as years.” So, to further clarify, they do not mean that the toxins stay under the skin for years, but rather, that some of us continually or consistently use toxic products and so there is a steady presence of toxins in our skin. I can definitely see how this would be misunderstood and hope that helps to clear it up… Lastly, I want to share a good rule of thumb regarding Wonderbar usage. Stick to products with a sole purpose. In other words, moisturizer meant to lock in moisture, powder and foundation (if you simply must) meant to cover and sun block meant to protect. Nothing added- SPFs, fragrances, chemicals, etc. Once you have adjusted to the bar, you may introduce actives or serums one at a time, so if you have some reaction, you can identify what is causing it. Many people say, “WHAT? I have to give up all my actives and my mineral powders?? I can’t do that!” Well, you don’t have to forever, but if you end up wanting to, now that’s a different story. We only ask that you give the actives and serums a rest while you are adjusting to the Wonderbar. You’ll get to know the bar and how it works best for you personally. Ironically, you might just find that you don’t need to wear makeup once you have adjusted. But the actives and serums? Yes, of course, reintroduce them at your discretion. One thing I learned while in New York is that the bare look is definitely “in” and chemical and toxin laden products are on their way “out”! Let the Wonderbar address your skin issues so that you don’t have to cover them up anymore! :) Hooray for Spring!
